Letizia Battaglia
Photographer

Opening Saturday, 28th November, from 17-20 pm

RonLangArt is excited to present never before shown photos by Italian Photographer Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935) from the anni di Piombo, the years of lead, in Sicily. This is her third solo exhibition at RonLangArt. Dutch film maker Jos de Putter has also produced a new documentary regarding to Rosaria Schifani whom Letizia portrayed, the widow of the bodyguard of judge Giovanni Falcone, who died in the attack. This documentary will be broadcasted in this December by VPRO (http://www.vpro.nl).

Letizia has already turned 80 on this March 5th. Sergio Matarella, the Italian president congratulated Letizia with her 80th birthday earlier this year. It was truly a honor for a woman who has long been ignored by the officials, since she exposed the side of Italy that the Italian government would not like the outside world to see. Freedom and justice were the engines that motived her life and her actions. She documented the pain of her country, the crimes of her enemies. She captured the painful pages in the Italian history.

For this solo exhibition we show the photos of women and children, the ‘silent’ victims of the Mafia, most of these photos have never been shown before. They are a unique series, and less known photographs printed in large format (50 x 60 cm).

Letizia Battaglia has won various international awards including:

1986
New York Times Award, New York.
The W.Eugene Smith Award", New York.

1999
Mother Jones, Achievement for Life Award, San Francisco.

2007

2009
